For anyone thinking about buying a moped today, it pays to know if you are old enough. Age is so important when it comes to riding, which is why at Direct Bikes we make sure you can get all the help you need. Instead of buying a moped without certainty that you can legally ride it, we want you to know just what you can ride.

That’s why we have broken down the basic rules to the moped age UK riders need to adhere to. If you break away from these age requirements, it could land you in trouble. So, what is the moped age in the UK? What age do you need to be to ride a moped?

What is the minimum moped age UK riders need to meet?

To ride a moped in the United Kingdom, you have to fit a very particular kind of age profile. If you intend to go for a moped, then the minimum age that you must be is sixteen (16). This is very important to note, as many riders will choose to go for a moped aged fifteen (15). Although you can get your provisional driving license towards the end of your 15th year, you cannot start riding until you are 16+.

There are various reasons for this, but it’s not a rule that you can flaunt. You will not be able to apply for any kind of license, road tax, insurance, or ownership of a vehicle until you are aged sixteen or above. Keep that in mind before you try and buy a moped.

What’s the age for riding a 50cc moped?

Have you spotted a 50cc moped to go for on our site? Good!

We sell many quality 50cc scooters and mopeds. These are some of our most popular rides with a lot of young riders. The main reason is that you could start riding a 50cc moped from the age of sixteen. This is the first vehicle that you could legally drive on the roads in the UK. To do so, you would need to go and get your Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) license.

You would also need to go and pass your theory and your practical tests if you wished to get your full driving license. At the age of 16, though, you are legally entitled to own and ride a 50cc moped. However, you do have to go and get your CBT and your provisional license beforehand.

What’s the age for riding a 125cc moped?

If you intend to step it up to a 125cc moped, then you just need to know where to start. At the time of writing, to hold a license to ride a vehicle beyond the 50cc level you would need to be the age of seventeen. You cannot apply for access to a 125cc moped or scooter before you are the age of 17. However, if you do reach this age then you can apply for a 125cc moped with your CBT.

Your CBT would give you the right to ride something like this. So long as you have your provisional driving license, too, this should not be an issue for you. Your CBT will give you the protection that you need to drive a 125cc moped, albeit with some limits such as your top speed, motorway access, carrying a passenger, and/or taking off your L plates.

When can I ride a moped in full?

To ride a moped from Direct Bikes in full, you will need either your AM or A1 license. Your AM license needs you to have your CBT as well as pass a theoretical and a practical test examination. If you can pass this, you could ride your 50cc moped to its top speed and be allowed to carry a pillion passenger. You could also take off your L plates.

For a full license for riding a 125cc moped, though, you need your A1 license. You can get this at the age of seventeen, and it would allow you to drive your 125cc moped completely unimpeded. That’s why we suggest that if you wish to get a moped, you make sure you have the right license. Not sure what license you have/need? Then just contact us. We can tell you which Direct Bikes scooters are rideable for you based on the license you have.
