Are motorised scooters safe for driving on the road?

Many people like to use these simple scooters for getting around, with their two-wheeled simplicity removing confusion. However, you are not allowed to go on the road with most motorised scooters.

However, you CANNOT use an electric scooter on the road. They are presently banned on the road but also the pavement. If you wish to drive an electric scooter around in the UK, it must be done on private land. And it must be done with the permission of the landowner. Without that, you are unable to drive a simple motorised scooter around.

If you are caught doing so in a public place, then you could be fined £300 and receive six points on your driving license.

If you wish to ride a scooter in the UK on the road, it has to be a petrol scooter. Every model that we sell at Direct Bikes in our 50cc and 125cc scooter ranges are 100% road legal. To drive one of our scooters, you would need to:

• Get it taxed – this is just like owning any other kind of vehicle.
• Obtain a license and pass all construction requirements asked of you.
• Get an MOT – you cannot have your motorised scooter without an MOT.
• Have fully working rear red lights and lighting on the front.
• Have operational signalling solutions – your hands don’t count.
• Obtain fully official number plates attributed to your scooter.
