At Direct Bikes, we want to make sure that buying a bike can be as easy as possible for you. Bikes might seem confusing, mostly because they come in so many shapes and sizes. At Direct Bikes, though, we look to take the difficulty out of the purchase. Whether you choose to buy a sleek sports bike or something with plenty of storage, you have many options to pick from regardless.

We recommend that anyone who is looking to take their first steps into motorbike riding looks to buy a 125cc motorbike. For most riders, they make the ideal place to start your early education into becoming a rider.

What are 125 bikes?

The term ‘125’ is related to the size of the engine. For a 125cc bike, you are buying something with an engine which is 125 Cubic Centimetres(cc) in size. It’s the ideal choice for those who want to try and get into motorcycling but don’t want to feel out of their depth.

With a 125cc bike from Direct Bikes, you are buying something that can ride at around 60 miles per hour top speed. Some can go a touch faster, such as the 125cc Sports RS from Direct Bikes. This has a top speed of around 68 miles per hour. Generally, though, you will find that most of our cheap 125 bikes will be able to reach a top speed of around 60mph. For most trips that you need to make, including riding on A roads, that is going to be about as fast you are likely going to need to go.

Are 125 bikes good for beginners?

In terms of motorbiking speeds, 125cc is about the smallest engine size you can find. At Direct Bikes, you can buy smaller models in the form of 50cc mopeds. Mopeds make a fine choice for anyone who is looking for a device that can keep them comfortable when riding in a city environment. If you choose to get a moped, though, you might not have the chance to go and ride it on open roads.

Their limited top speed of around 30mph means that riding on things like motorways can be a challenge, though. If you wish to get into motorbike riding as opposed to moped/scooter riding, though, 125cc is likely your earliest starting point.

The numerous cheap 125 bikes that you can get from Direct Bikes will definitely be worth your while in that case.

When can I start driving a 125cc bike?

Once you reach the age of 17, you can go and apply for your provisional bike riding license and also get your Compulsory Basic Training. With both your license and your training complete, you will have permission to ride for two years. Once your two years is up, you can either go and re-sit your CBT for another two years, or you can go and take your full driving license.

After two years, you will likely have had enough riding experience to make a choice on what comes next. Riding with your CBT is easy, but the limits will mean that you cannot fully test out your driving credentials. We recommend instead that if you are feeling comfortable riding with your CBT license, you should look to step it up and go for your full driving license.

To ride a 125 bike or 125cc moped from Direct Bikes, though, all you will need is your CBT license.

What limits does a CBT license holder have?

You are going to be able to drive more or less as you can as a ‘real’ driver.  However, with a CBT license, you are going to be limited to what kind of riding you can do. For example, some of the limits that can come with being a CBT holder include:

  • You are not allowed to drive without your L plates on. If your sole driving credentials are your provisional license and your CBT license, you are not allowed to remove your L plates.
  • You are not allowed to bring a passenger with you on board. Given a CBT is a limited license, you are going to be restricted to driving as the sole person onboard your bike.
  • You also are not allowed to ride beyond a certain speed limit. This can change depending on the size of your bike. You should speak with your CBT instructor about your speed limits.
  • Lastly, a CBT holder is not limited to drive on a motorway. You are limited to only driving on normal roads; riding on a motorway is considered for experienced riders only.
