Getting in the seat of a 125cc scooter: what do I need?

If you are going to start riding a scooter today, then you should absolutely take a look at getting your license. For a 125cc moped from Direct Bikes¸ you only need to get a few things (at least):

  • You need to prove that you are at least the age of 17.
  • You need to show that you have passed your Compulsory Basic Training (CBT).
  • You will also need to get at the very least a provisional driving license.

If you go down that route, then you are in a good position. You would be legally entitled to drive any 125cc moped in our collection. However, you need to work out first and foremost if this is what you want. With the combination above, you are somewhat limited as to what you can do with your moped.

What can’t I do with a CBT and a provisional?

For one, you are not going to be allowed to drive on a motorway. While any 125cc scooter from Direct Bikes is motorway-compatible, you need a full driving license. We recommend that you take the time to get a driving license sorted as soon as you can (more on that below).

You also cannot exceed a top speed of 28mph with your provisional and your CBT. Given the high top speed of a 125cc moped, that’s not going to let you get the most out of your vehicle. Another limitation is that you cannot bring a passenger on the back of your scooter. Given all of our scooters have space for you and one other, that’s another limit.

The other main limit with your provisional and your CBT is the fact that you cannot remove your L plates at any point.

What do I need to drive a 125cc scooter at the maximum speed?

Should you wish to get the most out of your purchase at Direct Bikes, you need a full driving license. For anyone aged 17+, you could go for your A1 license. This is the ideal license to get for most young riders. It’s a good choice as it allows you to:

  • Drive on the motorway with your 125cc moped at the maximum speed of 60mph.
  • Drive around with a passenger on the back, known as a pillion passenger.
  • You can also take off those L plates: you are now a fully-fledged scooter rider!

To obtain your license, you would need to achieve a pass in both a practical and a theoretical exam. If you do that, then you are going to be able to enjoy the experience at the very highest level possible. With your CBT and provisional, though, you can still have plenty of fun!
